Week 24 Little Children

 Week 24

Busy, busy this week (there's more but it can wait until next week)

RIP Possum - 16 years - best known for her bat-catching efforts as a younger girl.

Kids' Weekend - a couple of workers - if I let them drive the tractor

A "makeshift" solution to the steering of my tools cart...it took some figuring out between the 3 of us - to make the steering work from the front of the wheels instead of behind.

On Tuesday, Janny's mum took delivery of her new electric tricycle...takes a bit of getting used to.

...and on Wednesday, we could pick up "kleinkind" (little child = grandchild) Madeline and her friend Georgia - after they had a week in London and Amsterdam...still early in their 3 month adventure.

I had to send photos to Cheryl (Mum) to put her mind at rest....

We first had lunch at our local restaurant...

and then they went to look at Janny's brother's Frisian horses...

...then they caught up with some washing...

...then they crashed for a while :-)

Janny had to leave early as she was in a Local Theatre Group play (more later)

...so we went for a walk in the woods (again)... with Boeke...

On Thursday, we went to Dokkum (as usual, with visitors)

We had lunch on "Tromp", the largest tjalk ever built (1912)

Pondering the menu...

On Thursday evening, it was the small village equivalent of the Moomba Parade...(part of the Village Fair festivities).

On Friday, we dropped them off in Heerenveen in time for the 0700hrs train - heading off to Berlin xxx.

Janny and I were back in time for our yearly Bingo excursion with the clients..

...no prizes this year :-(

Village Theatre (from Wijnjewoude.net website) -

Neighbourhood supermarket Super Super is the gripping story of a small supermarket fighting for its survival. Directors Elvira Klimp and Heidie Talsma set the tone for an innovative interpretation of the concept of 'village theatre' with their daring interpretation of this comic drama.

The story behind the piece is that of a local supermarket that is in danger of losing its 'Super Super' predicate and being removed from the chain (14 branches). The arrival of a Megamarkt opposite the local supermarket and the quality of the staff do not help to prevent this debacle.

Fortunately (well, fortunately) Nicolette (Jesler de Boer) from the head office comes to sort things out. She expertly manages to wrap up store manager Sjors (Nico Viet) and together they come up with a campaign to save the local supermarket. Nicolette faces considerable competition from shelf stacker Plien (Anke van der Veen), who wants to move up.
The campaign leads to all sorts of complications with the staff and the few customers. Because everyone wants to go for that main prize!

Elvira and Heidie manage to portray the inexperienced actors as accurate characters. Bauke (Impe Stoker) from the vegetable department throws a 'strike' at the cauliflower bowling and Magda (Ina Fokkema) from the bread department sells her bread with verve, but unsliced. Because the slicing machine is broken, a bread knife is indeed included. But still.

A brilliant supporting role is played by Bep (Janny Copeland), the oldest employee. At one point she dozes off during the team building and plays this so lifelike that the audience wonders if this is acting: Or has Bep really gone to heaven and are we watching a Tommy Cooper-like act in our anniversary tent?

Meanwhile, customers Annette (Linda de Boer), Wim (Tjeerd Posthumus) and Roelie (Laura Bonfrer) enjoyed themselves with their well-stocked reading portfolio in the undrinkable coffee corner and the 'benefit shit' offers were quickly sold off the counter.

Cashier Chantal (Anna Boonstra), who radiated about as much interest in her job as a self-scan cashier, took great dedication in handing out the participation coupons with which a car could be won. A coveted prize among staff and customers, especially because it is so handy to drive to the Jumbo.

A special leading role was reserved for the slightly faltering sliding doors, actually the only thing that could stand a comparison with our own local supermarket. And with the sliding doors open, the audience could regularly enjoy the virtuoso sounds of the accordionist (Jaap Haven).

It was an unforgettable opening of the anniversary edition of the village festival in a packed hall with 400 people.

On Saturday, we had a BBQ as our last involvement with the Village Fair...

The Travels of Ben

He had a couple of weeks in Spain and Portugal and is now in New York with friend Chloe - who has a pretty good job in a New York High-rise building...
